Boys can!

The British Council announced on Thursday that it will be presenting its third annual Boys In Education Week from April 29 – May 2, under the theme: Boys Can!

The week of activities, it said, will be a precursor to its islandwide Boys Can Mentoring Programme, a three-year project set to launch in May with the support of the Grace & Staff Community Development Foundation.

“Last year we presented an opportunity for our male students (grades 5-9) to highlight the challenges and opportunities in their school life. Simultaneously, we brought parents, teachers and policy-influencing stakeholders to the table to engage each other in a meaningful way, to discuss challenges, opportunities and possible solutions to address boys’ learning, motivation and engagement. We also aim to address the wider issue of gender equity, with a view to demonstrating how engaging boys contributes to a more egalitarian education system for the advancement of both boys and girls,” explained Olayinka Jacobs-Bonnick, British Council’s country director for Jamaica.

“Now, with the support of the Grace & Staff Community Development Foundation, we will be working with more than 30 schools across the island to provide active mentoring for some of their most vulnerable male students with the hope of not only encouraging them to remain in school through career mentoring, but to help them to develop healthier relationships and lifestyle choices,” she added.

Christopher Williams, president & CEO of PROVEN Management Limited, also volunteered his time to mentor students during the 2018 Career Speed-Networking event.

In its Creating Equity in Teaching and Learning module, the Jamaica Teaching Council highlights that: “the concerns for the underperformance of boys have been expressed islandwide. The results of various formal examinations provide the evidence that the education of boys is in a crisis… The question of why boys are underperforming within our school system has been linked to a number of factors, including teaching methodology; socio-economic background; lack of communal support from parents and schools; and structure of the education system insufficiently catering to the needs of young men.”

Grace & Staff Community Development Foundation has supported Boys in Education Week since its inception in 2017. The fund’s general manager Tanketa Chance-Wilson shared that the goal of the programme aligns with Grace & Staff’s core principle.

“GraceKennedy is firmly committed to the development of Jamaica’s youth, and given the current and ongoing widespread discussion about the range of influences faced by our young people, and our young men in particular, we realise our responsibility in helping them to be their best selves now, and set a solid foundation for them to grow. We are really impressed with the work of the British Council on this area, and are very proud to partner with them again for the benefit of our young people, our boys in particular, and Jamaica at large,” she said.

The programme will feature more than 30 mentors across multiple career disciplines, each working with one school. Over the period of a year, mentees, mentors, teachers and parents will be taken through a programme to explore aspects of career development, emotional intelligence, leadership & confidence building, conflict management, communication and problem-solving skills.

UNESCO, which has been producing work on the subject of masculinity, is also partnering with British Council for the 2019 Boys in Education Week.

The four days of activities will take place at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston.

Tomorrow, the Empowering Educators Seminar lead by UNESCO will discuss inclusive pedagogies. Through group discussions and break-out activities, educators will explore alternative ways of teaching boys in an effort to help address the underperformance of our male students. The event’s guest speaker will be Dr Margaret Chin.

The focus will turn to parents on Tuesday, in a seminar, also led by UNESCO, exploring what a positive male role model looks like. Professor Opal Palmer Adisa will lead a panel that will facilitate discussion on masculinity and equip parents with skills to motivate their boys as they move through their academic journey.

On Wednesday, the focus will be on mentoring some 80 boys drawn from schools across Jamaica who will have the opportunity to engage leaders and professionals from diverse fields on a variety of topics.

The Career Speed-Mentoring Day for both boys and girls will be on Thursday, May 2, featuring professionals from organisations across the island engaging students in one-on-one sessions aimed at steering them towards achievable career goals, engendering more confidence in their ability to contribute responsibly to society, and creating a safe space for dialogue and sharing new ideas.

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities.

Halle Berry Says She Broke Three Ribs While Training For the Film ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum’

In an interview earlier this month, Halle Berry said she’s never trained for a movie as hard as she did for her upcoming action flick “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum,” starring Keanu Reeves. The actress also revealed the film got her in the best shape she’s ever been in.

But Berry would wait until another interview to reveal just how tough on her that training had been. She recently admitted to Extra that during production of the movie she was badly injured and director Chad Stahelski had to do without her for a while.

“I broke three ribs when I was rehearsing for ‘John Wick’” she said. “It’s like a badge of honor for me. We don’t know how it happened. I worked for a little while with broken ribs until I could no longer do it. He [Stahelski] waited for me to heal, when I came back I felt better.”

Berry also laid out the other types of training she had besides exercising.

“Hours and hours of stunt training, it’s gun training, it’s dog training, then it’s just strength training on top of that with my trainer, and it’s watching my diet,” she explained.

Besides talking about all she had to do for the “John Wick” film, Berry explained why she’s been sharing all of those proactive photos over the last month or so. Basically, the “Jungle Fever” actress said she’s proud of her chiseled frame and sees nothing wrong with showing it off.

Last month, for example, Berry drove the internet wild by showing her toned abs, and a few days ago she did the same by sharing a bubble bath photo of herself.

And one of the latest posts from Berry that’s getting a lot of attention is a clip of herself walking down the street in New York.

“Out here walking on sunshine 🍎,” the actress captioned the video.

“I’ve been in love with this woman my whole life ,” one person wrote underneath.

“Marry me,” wrote another.

“John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum” hits theaters on May 17.

Advocates Demand Accountability in Police Shooting Death of Bronx Man Kawaski Trawick: ‘He Needed Help, Not a Bullet’

Friends and supporters of a Bronx man gunned down police at his home earlier this month said they’re plagued by questions. They said they have few answers, however, about how the late-night confrontation resulted in 32-year-old Kawaski Trawick’s death.

Now, community advocates are rallying to demand accountability in Trawick’s killing. Demonstrators chanted “What’s his name? Kawaski Trawick” as they gathered in protest near the building where the avid dancer and fitness buff was shot dead.

“How could you just cut his life short?” Thomas Johnson, a friend of the slain man, told Spectrum’s NY1. “Like how? What happened?”

Authorities were responding to a 911 call at Hill House, a social services center for people battling addiction and other issues, around 10:50 p.m. April 14 when they encountered the Bronx man outside his fourth-floor unit, the New York Daily News reported. Police said Trawick was armed with a knife and a large stick, similar to a stickball bat.

The man, who advocates say was known to be emotionally unstable, was allegedly threatening neighbors and pounding on their doors with a stick after getting locked out of his own apartment.

“I was home watching TV and there’s a knock on my door,” Hill House  resident Richard Jones told the newspaper. “I tell him through the door, there’s nobody home. He was asking me for a dollar for a cigarette.”

Jones added that Trawick was “running around the hall, butt-ass naked” after getting locked out. A building security guard described the victim as a little “off” and said he would talk to himself or would go around trying to unlock people’s doors.

When police approached his apartment, they said Trawick charged that them, prompting one of the officers to deploy his Taser. The shock only temporarily subdued the man, and he went after the officers again. This time the officer fired a shot from his gun, striking Trawick in his upper body.

The Bronx man was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died.

NYPD Chief Terence Monahan said the shooting “appears to be justified,” however, community advocates argued that Trawick should have never been confronted by police.

“This was an individual who was experiencing emotional distress and he needed help and not a bullet to the chest,” said Vocal NY organizer Jason Walker, who attended last week’s rally. “He was in his room, so at the point of NYPD engagement he was not an active threat, why wasn’t de-escalation tactics happening?”

Another advocate, who asked to remain unnamed, questioned why the cops were called in the first place.

“When people call the police, they know exactly what they’re doing,” she told NY1. “They called the police because they felt [Trawick’s] life did not matter.”

One supporter said the tragedy spoke to how police are ill-equipped to intervene in situations involving the mentally ill.

Before NYPD officers responded to the Hill House apartment building, Chief Monahan said the FDNY had responded to a call from Trawick “claiming his front door was locked and his apartment was on fire.” He had food cooking on the stove.

At the time, authorities were receiving dueling 911 calls: one from a frantic Trawick reporting his fears of a fire and one from the building superintendent and a security guard claiming the man was banging on doors, harassing his neighbors.

As reported by THE CITY, “The FDNY came and left after breaking open the door of his apartment” and finding no fire. “Police arrived seven minutes later — an encounter that ended with Trawick’s shooting death.”

Trawick’s father, Ricky Trawick, told the outlet, “I don’t think they really had to kill my son, I don’t think they had to shoot him and shoot him dead like that.”

Monahan said the situation escalated “very quickly” and said the Bronx man wasn’t naked when he was shot. The incident was captured on one of the officers’ body-worn cameras, although the footage hasn’t been made public.

Trawick, who had moved to New York from Atlanta to live his dream, was remembered by friends as someone who had his issues but wasn’t violent. Longtime friend Anthony Smallwood, 22, told the Daily News that Trawick had gotten into a lot of  “physical fights” and was shunned by his family because of his sexual orientation.

“He was bisexual. We’re both bisexual,” said Smallwood, who was distraught after learning of his friend’s death. “He’s the one that helped me come out.”

With two weeks now passed, advocates are calling on the attorney general’s office to conduct an independent investigation.

Angela Bassett Tapped to Receive Honorary Doctorate From HBCU Morehouse College

On May 19 the 135th commencement exercises for the historically Black school Morehouse College in Atlanta will take place, and Angela Bassett will be given an honorary degree on that day.

After the New York-born actress received a bachelor’s degree in African-American Studies and a master of fine arts from Yale University, she had her breakout role as Reva Deveraux in John Singleton‘s 1991 classic “Boyz n the Hood.”

From there, Bassett wowed audiences with her performance in the 1992 film Malcolm X, where she played Betty Shabazz. She also received an Oscar nomination in 1994 for playing Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do with It.”

Other big screen successes for Bassett include “Waiting to Exhale,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” “Akeelah and the Bee,” as well as “Notorious” and “Black Panther.” Today, she’s one of the stars and producers of the Fox series “9-1-1.”

The founder, chairman & CEO of Vista Equity Partners Robert F. Smith will also be honored at the commencement ceremony and given an honorary doctor of humane letters degree.

Smith, who’ll give the keynote address at the graduation, donated $1.5 million to Morehouse in January for a new outdoor study area on the campus, and he also created the Robert Frederick Smith Scholars Program for disadvantaged students.

Smith also reportedly is the largest private donor to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington.

Smith and Bassett will be honored as more than 300 scholars receive degrees at Morehouse’s commencement.

Meghan McCain Implies Rep. Omar Bears Some Blame for Attack on Synagogue, Congresswoman Issues the Best Unbothered Response

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is hitting back at Meghan McCain after the conservative commentator attempted to blast her during a discussion on anti-Semitism following a deadly shooting at a California synagogue.

“Oh, bless her heart!” Omar tweeted in response to a clip of “The View” co-host bringing up what have been condemned as anti-Semitic remarks made by the Minnesota Democrat and arguing that such rhetoric should be called out in the wake of Saturday’s shooting.

A white supremacist gunman opened fire inside the Chabad of Poway synagogue in San Diego, killing one woman and leaving the rabbi and two other worshipers injured.

McCain weighed in on the attack during a Sunday appearance on ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos.

“I do think when we are having conversations about anti-Semitism we should be looking at the most extreme on both sides, and I would bring up Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and some of her comments that got so much attention,” she said, mentioning the congresswoman unprompted.

McCain argued that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) “wasn’t hard enough” in response to Omar “trafficking in anti-Semitic language.” The former Fox News contributor then mentioned Omar’s controversial “it’s all about the Benjamins” tweet, the congresswoman’s quip about why Washington legislators are so consistently responsive to the Israel lobby, a remark that Omar’s critics immediately called an ancient anti-Semitic trope about Jews using their money to control governments.

Though Rep. Omar apologized for her comments, House Democrats moved forward in passing a resolution condemning anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and other forms of bigotry.

“When you are talking about rhetoric and you want to talk about President Trump, and by the way, I agree he needs to have his feet held to the fire as well, but we are talking about it on both sides of the aisle as well,” McCain concluded on Sunday.

Critics didn’t take too kindly to her criticisms of Omar, however, and slammed McCain for suggesting the congresswoman was somehow to blame for the synagogue attack.

“@MeghanMcCain how dare you suggest that @IlhanMN is in some way responsible for the murder of our people when the Poway shooter’s manifesto showed his penchant for violent Islamophobia and antisemitism alike,” Women’s March activist Sophie Ellman-Golan tweeted. “We know who is killing us. How dare you.”
“If only @MeghanMcCain would use her concern for the safety of Jews to take on white Christian antisemitism instead of weaponizing us and our deaths against a progressive Muslim politician,” Elman-Golan added.
Bishop Talbert Swan accused McCain of “gas lighting” and blaming Omar for “the violent actions of a white supremacist.”
“She’s a disgusting, bigoted, partisan, hack, who perpetuates and defends white supremacy,” Swan tweeted.
This isn’t the first time Omar and McCain have butted heads. Earlier this year, the freshman Democrat blasted McCain for her “faux outrage” over her alleged anti-Semitic remarks.

Filming of Bond Movie Major Boost for Tourism

Buoyed by the positive feedback emanating from the news that the latest in the James Bond iconic franchise will be filmed in Jamaica, local officials and stakeholders are calling it “a massive publicity boost for the island”.

“It’s not a stretch to say we get filmed all the time,” said Chief Strategist and Advisor in the Ministry of Tourism, Delano Seiveright.

He told JIS News that just last year international hitmaker, Beyonce, was “here at least five times” doing videos, while fellow artist, Cardi B, was a fixture at the Trident Castle in Port Antonio, Portland.

“We have had calibre movies filmed here, such as The Mighty Quinn, Cocktail, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Dr. No, Live and Let Die, and Papillon, just to name a few” he added.

For his part, Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, whose Ministry had been working hard behind the scenes in conjunction with the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, and Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), said “this latest development” can only further reaffirm Jamaica’s position as a favourite getaway spot for the “rich and famous”.

The Minister further noted that “the country’s allure and rich history,” notably in tourism, culture, sports and entertainment, “put it head and shoulders above its island competitors”.

“Not too long ago, we had Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, at Round Hill, Hanover, where they were here to attend a wedding,” Mr. Bartlett noted.

“Also not too long ago, Khloe Kardashian from the reality hit show, ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’, was here with her family on vacation. There have also been sightings of countless others, including the great Stevie Wonder,” he added.

Mr. Bartlett said he is very happy with how things are panning out in the industry, noting that Jamaica is now the envy of many other destinations.

“I have been saying, at every opportunity, that we do have an edge as it relates to making inroads in the high-end market,” he noted.

“There is no way we could have paid for the kind of publicity that we have been receiving from this new James Bond movie – a real shot in the arm for our tourism sector,” the Minister said.

Mr. Bartlett pointed out that there are a host of other celebrities who have been coming to Jamaica unannounced for their vacations, with Port Antonio, Hanover and Negril being the favourite destinations.

He said Jamaica is also benefiting from the celebrity-pull factor, where persons are flocking to destinations where they see “their favourite stars going”.

“What you find is that the tabloids and gossip seekers tend to follow these people wherever they go, writing about their whereabouts, so their fans can keep up with them. Jamaica has been the direct beneficiary of a lot of free and positive publicity as a result,” the Minister said.

‘LHHATL’ Star Bambi Questions Yung Joc’s Choice in Women After He Claims He Had a Few ‘Good Ones’: ‘Which Ones?’

The family dynamic between “Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta” stars Lil Scrappy, Bambi and Yung Joc is one of a kind.

Joc recently revealed to viewers that he’d been dating a new woman named Kendra for quite some time now, but he was hesitant to introduce her to his cast mates because their relationship overlapped when he was apparently still messing around with ex-girlfriend Karlie Redd.

But the way that Yung Joc tells it, his relationship with Redd was apparently over when he and his new boo Kendra sparked their romance. Of course, his close friends Lil Scrappy and his wife Bambi weren’t buying his story and decided to get down to the bottom of the mess.

“Here it is, Karlie was still trying to stay in the picture,” Joc nonchalantly explained to Bambi and Scrappy, who stared at him in confusion.

Before the “It’s Going Down” rapper could further explain, Bambi interrupted him to gain a better understanding, saying, “You were still with Karlie and you met Kendra.” Joc hesitantly agreed.

The Streetz 94.5 fm radio host also indicated that he was seemingly ready to marry Kendra, hinting that she may be the “one” for him. The conversation took a hilarious turn when he referred to his ex-girlfriends as “good ones,” to which Bambi responded, “Which ones?” clearly disagreeing with their friend.

On the other hand, Bambi’s response had “LHHATL” viewers in stitches.

“Bam get on my nerves 🤣🤣🤣 ‘Which one?’ 🤣 yes get down to the bottom lol.”

“Good job Bam…read thru all that! She said which ones 😂 do that! Got a girl he likes but ain’t gon quite break it off w ok girl until a couple more strokes.”

“Damn nobody got faith in joc 🤦🏾‍♂️ Bam said ‘ which ones’ & was

Despite what folks may think, Yung Joc and his fiancée Kendra appear to be still going strong.

Ashanti Gives Fans ‘Sunshine’ in Scanty Bikini: ‘I Got the Month of May’

Ashanti is blowing social media away with smoking-hot photos of herself enjoying the beach.

The “Good Good” singer appears to be enjoying her time on the beach while soaking up the sun. She’s currently visiting the Caribbean after headlining for the 50th Anniversary of St. Maarten Carnival with her music peers Ja Rule and Keyshia Cole on April 25. But a little work clearly doesn’t stop the singer from enjoying herself.

Ashanti took to Instagram on Sunday with an alluring photo of herself standing on the beach in a yellow string bikini and her gold Anna-Karin Karlsson sunglasses. The getup showed off her assets, including her toned abs and thighs. Her geotag located her at Karakter Beach Bar, where she apparently was relishing at. She added in her caption, “Sunshine 🌞.”

Ashanti. @ashanti/Instagram

The photo received more than 212,000 likes and over 2,700 comments from fans, the majority of them complimenting her tantalizing appearance.

“Got me saying Baby ‘i got the month of May’ 🎶😩😩😍 the gyal yuh hotter Dan the sun 🔥.”

“Come thru Sis With That Bomb ass NATURAL BODY!! 😍 snatching all my edges.”

“Beautiful sis and it’s all real too! So good to see a natural body. Love it.”

“You’re the one who shines here 🔥😎 damn girl, you are just perfection! #RealCurves #BodyGoals 🕶😋.”

Others denounced the image.

“We get it you gotta nice body can we please get some music 👀.”

“Put some clothes on and give up music 😡!”

When it comes to the 38-year-old’s slim physique, it’s apparently well earned. She told People Magazine earlier this month that she eats clean and works out consistently. She does however allow herself to have two cheat days where she can eat anything she wants.

Ashanti said she typically follows a pescatarian diet and tries to stay away from other meats.

“I cut out a lot of meat,” she said. “I think again, self-health and self-awareness are so important. All of that stuff is so important to maintaining your body, knowing what’s in your food, the GMO’s and the chemicals, and I’m super aware of this stuff.”

She added, “I feel like it’s very necessary to just be aware of what you’re eating. … I have a trainer and we try to go five days a week when I’m home and then when I get to another place, he’s texting me a workout or he’ll FaceTime me and say, ‘Are you still in the bed?’ We try to keep it going.”

As far as music goes, the singer said she’s working on a new joint album with former “Murder Inc” label mate Ja Rule, which fans expect apparently sometime this year.

“We have some shows together. He’s definitely gonna be working on stuff and we’re gonna be doing some stuff together as well,” the singer noted. “We’re still on the path to dropping a joint album. I think that should be kind of cool, too.”

50 Cent Tells Jill Scott He Loves Her, Erykah Badu Has a Word About It, and Fans Love the Whole Thing

It’s happened again. 50 Cent and Jill Scott had some Internet banter that bordered on flirtation.

They first did it earlier this month when the “Wanksta” rapper let Scott know that he never forgot about her getting kinky with a microphone last year.

“we been in a full blown relationship since,” he wrote to her then.

In this recent exchange, 50 responded to an Instagram message that Scott wrote about being a woman and feeling safe. Scott made the point that sometimes a woman has to seek security and other times she has to be the security.

“Women wanna feel and be safe. Sometimes you can just go where safety/security is,” wrote the soul singer.

“Unfortunately, other times, you must focus on center mass until the clip is empty. #metaphorbutnotreallyALSO I hate when the chick, in the movie, gets a chance to stop her assailant once and for all but only knocks him out and runs,” she added.

Scott’s words obviously touched something in 50, because he proclaimed his love.

“Ok now Jill I think I’m in Love wit you,” he wrote. “You are low key crazy as a mother f–ker hun?”

“More than a lil bit in this crazy society,” Scott replied. “But @50cent, nobody has a bigger earned tick than you. Shaka Zulu,” she replied.

Erykah Badu eventually saw Scott’s post and wrote “UN safe,” which 50 responded to with sex talk.

“Oh no what are you doing here?” he asked the “Mama’s Gun” maker. “This must be the danger zone. Your s–t so good n—-s don’t even know where they are after they f–k wit you.”

Folks simply loved that Scott and 50 were messaging each other, and many found the whole thing humorous.

“I’m hollering!!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Got to love these people sense of humor,” someone wrote.

“Im here for it! This is the next reality Love Jones,” wrote a second person.

But there were some who said the risqué talk was just a little too much for them, and they decided to bow out.

” I’m finna go to the kids table this too much,” one person commented.
